Jerry Bauer, a professional conservationist scientist and an award-winning photographer, has more than 40 years of experience working in the Latin America and Caribbean Region. He has lived and developed conservation programs in the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, and Puerto Rico and he has photographed in every country in Central America and many of the Caribbean Islands. Jerry was a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer in Honduras from 1975 to 1977. Today he lives in Luquillo, PR.
Jerry collaborates with many not-for-profit organizations (NGOs) dedicated to the conservation of tropical forests and wildlife. He has helped found three active conservation NGOs in Central America. Jerry uses his photography as a tool to help create awareness and raise funds for the conservation of wild areas. Since the 1990s, Jerry has taught photography and communication workshops to young scientists throughout the region assisting them to use audio-visuals as a means of communicating positive conservation messages to the public.
Jerry has won many international awards for his photography, including the North American Nature Photography Association’s Mission Award and Showcase Award, The Nature Best Windland Smith Rice International Photography Award, and The MarCom and Communicator Awards, among others. His photographs are widely published in magazines, books, web pages, and tourism promotional material throughout the region. In addition, Jerry’s photography has appeared in National Geographic Magazine and on exhibit at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC, the U.S. Embassy in Managua, Nicaragua, the US Agency for International Development Washington DC Headquarters, and the Nicaragua Mission.
Jerry holds both a B.S. and M.S. degree in Forest Resource Management. He is a member of the National Association for Interpretation (NAI), the North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA), and the Asociación Puertorriqueña de Fotógrafos de Naturaleza, Inc. (APFONA). He is also a National Association for Interpretation Certified Interpretive Guide and an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Forestry at Southern Illinois University.
